Meet Dr. Bliss Lewis MD

My path into integrative psychiatry began earlier than I realized. I was living in Poland when the Chernobyl disaster happened. Overnight, radioactive rain changed the landscape—and changed the course of my life. Watching the effects of environmental toxicity, and seeing my father’s health decline after the exposure, planted the first seed of curiosity about how the world around us shapes our health.

Years later, during my time at Harvard Medical School, my own health began to unravel. I developed panic attacks, sleep issues, and depression. The medical advice I received was predictable: multiple diagnoses and multiple medications. Sitting in the psychiatrist’s office, I sensed something was missing. I knew healing would require more than prescriptions.

That moment pushed me to look deeper.

While completing my training in psychiatry at Columbia and child psychiatry at NYU, I also explored healing traditions across the world. I wanted to understand all the ways people heal—not just what we learn in Western medicine.

I studied:

  • Biology at Harvard College
  • Medicine at Harvard Medical School
  • Neuroplasticity with Nobel laureate David Hubel
  • Mind–body medicine with Dr. Herbert Benson
  • Traditional healing approaches in India, Poland, Russia, and Israel
  • The intersection of shamanic practices and psychotherapy
  • Trauma-healing methods across cultures
  • Mind–body techniques including yoga, mindfulness, and hypnosis

Each experience added another piece to the puzzle of what true healing looks like.

My own health continued to be a teacher. When I was told that radiation exposure had affected my thyroid and fertility, I applied everything I had learned—scientific and traditional—to my own life. Today, I have two healthy children and a deep understanding that real transformation happens when we look beyond symptoms and explore the full story of what’s happening inside us.

That full-spectrum approach is now the foundation of The BLISS Protocol. Together with our team of psychiatrists, nurse practitioners, and therapists, we help patients heal on both the biological and emotional levels.
